Making the decision to eat healthy may seem like a simple decision, but it can be easier said than done. In many cases you can be your own food nemesis. The keys to your un-doing may be hiding in your own pantry or refrigerator.

It’s much harder to resist eating junk when you have readily available in your home, so giving your fridge and pantry an overhaul is essential. Out with the bad food and in with the good food must be your mantra. Wondering what to toss and what to replace it with? Here are a few ideas:

Trash It!!

Fatty meat products, like pulled pork, bacon, fat-marbled beef, and any fried meats.

Butter, margarine, whole-fat milk, full-fat cheese and yogurt.

Any veggies that are fried, battered, or covered in cheese or other unhealthy sauces.

White rice, products made with processed flour (i.e. white bread), sugar-coated cereals.

Chips, crackers, cookies, pastries, cakes, microwave popcorn.

Soda, juice drinks that aren’t 100% juice, diet drinks.

Commercially-made dinners, pizzas, and snacks.

Gravies, sauces, spreads, or dressings with mayonnaise, sour cream, cream, or cheese as a base, condiments with high sugar content.

Cache It!!

Skinless chicken breast, lean ground turkey, turkey hot dogs, fish, shellfish.

Olive or canola oil, fat-free milk, low-fat soy milk, reduced fat yogurt and cheese.

Any fresh or frozen fruits and veggies.

Brown rice, whole grain bread and pasta, oat-based cold cereals, shredded wheat, bran flakes.

Dark chocolate, mini semi-sweet chocolate chips, walnuts, almonds, dried fruits, organic popcorn kernels.

Orange, grapefruit, or cranberry juice, naturally-flavored water, sparkling water.

Frozen meals with no more than 4g sugar and fat and no more than 400 mg of sodium.

Salt, pepper, fresh garlic, low-sodium soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, virgin olive oil, apple butter, organic ketchup, mustard, BBQ sauce, and salad dressing.

If you’re having trouble stress or chronic pain, massage may be one of the avenues you’ve considered travelling down to find relief. There are, however, a multitude of different styles of massage to choose from. Each style employs different methods and results in different benefits. Here’s a quick breakdown of some of the most popular methods of massage, their methods, and their benefits:

Swedish Massage

By far the most common form of massage, Swedish massage employs long, soft, kneading strokes in combination lighter rhythmic tapping strokes on the uppermost layers of muscle. Strokes with circular motions are often applied. Swedish massage is effective in promoting relaxation, boosting energy, and can even help with recovery from injuries.

Aromatherapy Massage

Utilizing a combination of massage and scented essential oils, aromatherapy massage is particularly suited to treating stress-related conditions or conditions with an emotional component.

Neuromuscular Massage

This style employs manipulation of soft tissue and targets underpinning causes of chronic pain involving the nervous and muscular system. It also addresses tender muscles points, circulation, nerve compression, postural issues, and biomechanical issues caused by repetitive movement injuries.

Deep Tissue Massage

Best for addressing painful, stiff spot in the body, deep tissue massage employs slow deliberate strokes focusing of tissue deep under the skin. It is less rhythmic than other forms of massage, but can still be very therapeutic.

Sports Massage

Developed to assist muscle groups associated with specific sports, this method utilizes a variety of approaches to help athletes in training. Non-athletes can uses sports massage to promote flexibility, prevent injuries, or aid in recovery from injury.

Chair Massage

This is a good method for people on the go. A session typically takes 15 – 20 minutes, and is preformed while the patient is fully clothed and sitting in a special chair. Chair massage focuses on the neck, shoulders, back, and arms.

Shiatsu Massage

Japanese for “finger pressure”, Shiatsu massage therapists use varied, rhythmic pressure on specific points of the body called acupressure points. Acupressure points are believed to loom large in the flow of the body’s vital energy and Shiatsu removes blockages at acupressure points.

Thai Massage

Thai massage therapists employ their own body to manipulate the patient into different yoga-like positions. This method often includes compression of muscles, mobilization of joints, and acupressure.

Hot Stone Massage

Often used in combination with Swedish massage techniques, practitioners of hot stone massage place warmed stones at specific points of the patient’s body. The stone can be left in place for a short time or used as massage tools. This method can be very soothing as the stone send heat deep into the body.

Reflexology

Developed in China, this method employs hand, thumb, and finger techniques to stimulate specific spots on the feet. These areas correspond to different areas of the body. It is very effective at relieving foot pain, and is also quite relaxing.

Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy brings many bodily changes and with them, stress. Pregnancy massage works to relieve this stress. It also helps to reduce leg and arm swelling and relieve muscle and joint pain. This method is especially helpful during those times during pregnancy when use of drugs or medical techniques is discouraged.

Why Prayer or Meditation is Important to Your Health

Prayer and meditation are both excellent ways to lower your stress level. People who meditate regularly age better, live longer, and handle adversity better. Prayer and meditation foster a sense of belonging and connection to something bigger than oneself. Through prayer or meditation, one can detoxify the body and rid the mind of toxic thoughts.

Hindrances to Prayer and Meditation

There are a myriad of distractions that can detract from the quality of your prayer or meditation. Sometimes, they can keep you from praying or meditating altogether. Distracting thoughts can keep you from the proper concentration needed. Noise can be disruptive as you try to quiet down your mind. Family and work responsibilities can leave you with little time to pray or meditate.

Benefits of Prayer and Meditation

Reduced stress

Lower blood pressure

Decreased risk of heart disease

Better control of thoughts

Increased concentration and creativity

Increased learning and memory

Decreased risk of anxiety and depression

Deeper rest, easier breathing

Tips for Better Prayer or Meditation

Set aside a special time and place to pray or meditate

Minimize interruptions (Turn off your phone, tell friends and family you’re not to be disturbed, etc.)

Select a comfortable posture of body position

Give yourself plenty of time (You may stress out or forget things if you’re in too much of a hurry.)

Pray or meditate aloud (This forces you to really think about what you’re going to say.)

Be persevering. Have patience. (It may take time for you to really get it.)

Sunday was the first Mother’s Day for Sugarland singer Jennifer Nettles. She celebrated the holiday with another big first — she debuted her son Magnus Hamilton Miller, born Dec. 6, 2012.

Fans had been wondering when Nettles would reveal an image of her pride and joy. Now that she has, we can finally gawk and “ooh” and “ahh” with reckless abandon. The songstress tweeted an intimate photo of herself with her little guy, who is clearly the love of her life.

“So much love and joy on my first Mother’s Day!” she wrote. “A very Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mamas! ‪#MothersDay.”
